Frequently asked questions
Is this a certification or registration?
No. There is no government registry or certification for service animals or ESAs in the US, and Canada has only voluntary provincial programs in BC, Alberta and Nova Scotia. ServiceDogKit is identification and education — it helps you use the rights you already have.
What's the difference between a service dog and an ESA?
A service dog is trained to perform specific tasks for a disability and has public-access rights. An ESA provides comfort by its presence, needs no training, and is protected mainly in housing. Take the quiz to see which fits.
Can my landlord refuse my ESA?
Under the US Fair Housing Act and Canadian human rights codes, landlords must consider a reasonable accommodation request and may ask for a letter from your health professional if your need isn't obvious. The kit includes the request letter and a letter outline for your clinician.
Can I fly with my animal?
In the US, airlines must accept trained service dogs with the DOT form; ESAs fly under pet policies. In Canada, carriers must accept service dogs trained by a specialist with 48 hours' notice; ESAs depend on the carrier. The kit has checklists for both.
Do you write doctor's or therapist's letters?
No. We give you an outline to bring to your own licensed provider. We don't assess disability or arrange clinicians.
Where don't you sell?
Residents of California, Hawaii, Arkansas and Michigan, and anyone outside the US and Canada. See the Terms.
